Space for Hackers
In this class quest, students experience what it's like to make a choice between going down the wrong or the right path. They become either an ethical hacker or a black hat hacker! They are taken through the story by Kimi Klepto. Kimi is on her way to an observatory to watch stars and satellites. She has arranged to call her sweetheart when she sees a shooting star. When that happens and she tries to video call, she finds she has no access to do so. But she doesn't let that stop her. She decides to hack the satellites to restore her own connection. Then, someone comes along to present her and the class with a choice: Will you proceed with your plan, or will you ensure you have permission and help others while you hack?
Learning Objectives
Students will…
- Have formed an opinion about what constitutes right or wrong actions online.
- Understand what (ethical) hacking is.
- Know what a Black Hat, White Hat (ethical hacker), and Grey Hat hacker are, and the differences between them.
- Know where to go if they have ethical hacking talent (or recognize it in classmates) and how they can contribute to a better world with this talent.
Points
The class quests earn points. Individually, but also as a class. The points that students earn individually determine their place on the HackShield scoreboard. After completing each class quest, which can only be played via a teacher account, you as a teacher will receive a code. Students can enter this code in their individual accounts and receive points and a shield. These can be found in their HackShield accounts.
